Summary: What mobilises MENA? Trends and trajectories of regional contentious politics after the first wave of uprisings - ملخّص: ما الذي يحرّك منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا؟ تحديد اتجاهات ومسارات السياسة والنزاعات الإقليمية بعد موجة الانتفاضات الأولى
The first session of our centre’s webinar series for 2021-2022 “Beyond Winter and Spring: politics and social contention in the MENA region after 2011” was held on Thursday 21 October 2021.
The discussion was moderated by Dr. Michele Scala (Sciences Po Lyon, CeSSRA), with speakers: Prof. Andres Teti (University of Aberdeen), Dr. Daniel Tavana (Institute for Advanced Study in Toulouse (IAST), Université Toulouse 1 Capitole), Dr. Stephanie Daher (CeSSRA), and Dr. Rossana Tufaro (CeSSRA).
Prof. Andrea Teti gave an overview of contentious movements in the region, notably Egypt and Jordan, and how they denounced systemic issues in the regimes in place. During his intervention, Dr. Daniel Tavana linked between the study of contentious movements and its trends, such as the expansion of repression and coercion, and electoral trends and competition in the region.
Dr. Stephanie Daher presented the collective actions trends in Tunisia, such as the high degree of decentralisation, and their persistence over weeks at times despite Covid measures, and geo-spatial solidarity between protesters across various regions. And last, Dr. Rossana Tufaro provided information on the main trends of collective actions in Jordan, including high demands for socio-economic rights (job stability, wages increase, among others), a quest for social protection, and solidarity with Palestine.

عُقدت الندوة الأولى من سلسلة ندواتنا لعامي ٢٠٢١-٢٠٢٢، "ما بعد الشتاء والربيع: السياسة والنزاعات الاجتماعية في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا بعد العام ٢٠١١"، نهار الخميس في ٢١ تشرين الأول/أكتوبر ٢٠٢١.
يسَّر الندوة د. ميكيلي سكالا (معهد الدراسات السياسية في ليون، مركز العلوم الإجتماعية للأبحاث التطبيقية)، وتحدّث فيها كل من بروفيسور أندريا تيتي (جامعة أبردين) ود. دانييل تافانا (معهد الدراسات المتقدمة في تولوز، جامعة تولوز ١ كابيتول) ود. ستيفاني ضاهر (مركز العلوم الإجتماعية للأبحاث التطبيقية) ود. روسانا توفارو (مركز العلوم الإجتماعية للأبحاث التطبيقية).
قدّم البروفيسور أندريا تيتي لمحة عامة عن التحركات الإجتماعية في المنطقة، مركّزًا على مصر والأردن، وكيف ندّدت بالقضايا النُظُمية فيها. وربط د. دانيال تافانا خلال مداخلته بين دراسة التحركات الإجتماعية ومساراتها، مثل اتساع نطاق القمع والقسر، وبين مسارات العمليات الإنتخابية والمنافسة في المنطقة.
وعرضت د. ستيفاني ضاهر اتجاهات ومسارات التحركات الإجتماعية في تونس، مثل لا مركزيتها الواسعة واستمرارها على مدى أسابيع في بعض الأحيان على الرغم من الإجراءات المتخذة للوقاية من كورونا، والتضامن بين المتظاهرين الذي يتعدّى حدود الجغرافيا والأمكنة. وأخيراً، قدّمت د. روسانا توفارو المعلومات عن مسارات التحركات الإجتماعية في الأردن، بما في ذلك المطالب المتعلقة بالحقوق الاجتماعية والاقتصادية (الاستقرار الوظيفي وزيادة الأجور وغيرها) والسعي للوصول إلى الحماية الاجتماعية والتضامن مع فلسطين.
